Ahhh, New Year's resolutions. A time when you can start over and forget the past. A new beginning where you can focus on new goals without old baggage. Some of the most common ones revolve around your health (losing weight, gaining muscle, eating better, etc...). Other popular choices revolve around love (start dating, revive that flame with your spouse, spend more quality time with your kids, etc..). All of those choices are good ones, even if they only last for a little bit since we all know most resolutions aren't carried out for the entire year. However, this year, I am going to be committed to following through on my resolution. In fact, as I accomplish my goals, they will enable me to achieve the goals I mentioned above. And to keep me honest with my progress, I have decided to write something up everyday on this blog. Now, every post won't be the same size. I'm not a professional writer or anything and I'm not getting paid for this. So, I'm sure somedays will be very short and sweet as "free time" with a full-time job and a family consisting of a wife and 3 kids is sometimes hard to come by. But I am committing to jotting something down everyday as this in turn helps me realize what I've accomplished towards my goals. Who knows, I may be inspired somedays and have multiple posts.
So, what's my specific resolution you ask? Well, all you have to do is read the title of the blog. I'm committing to continue with the journey to debt freedom. And when I say "debt", I don't mean just credit cards. You're not going to see me with no credit card debt, driving around town with a car I still owe payments on....or worse yet, leasing. And here's the big one, no debt means not having a mortgage. That's right folks, your house and cars (if you don't own them outright) are actually debt. When it's put that way, it sounds pretty obvious. But I'm willing to bet that the majority of people don't typically think of things like that. In fact, if you have anything in your house that you bought off of special financing (i.e. 0% down, no interest/same as cash, etc...), guess what? Those "things" are debt as well. I should know, I used to have an entire house (or 3) furnished with debt. But the thing was, I never considered it debt. But now I know better and my family and I are on track to be free forever.
So, my continued journey toward this ultimate goal will be chronicled through this blog. I plan on sharing my daily thoughts, some days I'll be feeling great about our mission while others I'll be hating the fact that I can't have the things I feel I've earned. Some posts will be about lessons learned and tips/tricks that we use daily to continue down the right track. I want to throw in some posts to give additional background and context of my situation. I've found that the best way of learning is to hear of stories that directly relate to me. As I'm confident many people have gone through the same ups and downs as I have, I'm hoping that my stories can benefit others the way some stories have really touched me.
